Sloan at Burke Lake Park
June 8, 2014
Two-year-old Sloan is the epitome of why I LOVE working with children, especially at the one to two year time frame. They are able to listen just enough to grab a few quick shots at each location, and they are so very expressive! You won't see many "cheesey" smiles at this special age. :)
Sloan was in town visiting her grandparents from Georgia. I had just returned from a quick birthday trip to New Orleans with my sisters and cousin, so we had one day for this photo shoot. We had planned to meet at a small coffee shop in Occoquan, which is a quaint river town just along the water's edge. Much to our surprise, a festival was being held along the river, and all roads were blocked. Plan B - Burke Lake Park!
I had never been to Burke Lake and was a little nervous not knowing what we were in for. We quickly found a man-made stair case tucked nicely into the woods that surrounded the lake, and got started. Sloan was amazing. She was so interested in her surroundings it was as if I wasn't even there. I followed her around the lake and captured each and every one of her adorable expressions. It was a day to remember for her mama and Popi!
Burnside Farms with Julia
May 4, 2014
Miss J and her mama Erin met me at Burnside Farms in Haymarket to enjoy a lovely spring morning among the flowers. And this time I brought a little (young AND small) helper - my 3-year-old daughter Alanna! (If you have never experienced flower picking at Burnside, I suggest you give it a try! For a nominal fee you enter the fences with only a basket and scissors. It's a perfect way to get outside and return home with beautiful fresh-cut flowers!)
Alanna and I arrived a little early to assess the scene. It was gorgeous! Red, pink, white, yellow, and purple tulips covered a large field like a blanket. There were a few barns, some farm animals you could pay a visit, and a duck pond at the bottom of the hill. We filled almost an entire basket of colorful tulips before Julia and Erin had arrived! There were a handful of other photographers there as well, so I knew I was in the right place. :)
Julia is just the cutest little lady. She doesn't say much, and she sticks tight to her mom. She is one of my favorite little subjects to photograph! After only an hour we had a couple hundred amazing shots, and the notion that we were all going to return next year!
Cherry Blossom Engagement Session
April 12, 2014
I had the please of shooting my very first (wow!) engagement session in April. This couple is very special to me because the bride just so happens to be my very first roommate in Washington, D.C. I moved to the area immediately following my college graduation from Penn State, and given the ridiculous rent prices I moved in with a family whom I had never met before. In 3 short months I became a part of this amazing group, and we remain close to this day!
Of course I was a little anxious about this shoot. Not only was it my first engagement, but it was to be held downtown D.C. on one of the busiest days of the year - Cherry Blossom Peak. Like most Northern-Virginians, I have only ventured to the festival one other time in the 10 years I have lived in the area. As soon as I arrived on the scene, I remembered why. Hoards of people flooded the streets and sidewalks surrounding the Tidal Basin. You could barley walk let alone find a secluded area to take intimate photos. But somehow we made it all work, and found time in the middle of the day to grab food and margaritas at my favorite restaurant!
Jordan and Jay are one of those couples who just work. They balance and perfectly compliment one another. I am blessed to be a part of their special day in November of this year!
